History of Bluffdale

Bluffdale is named for its miles of bluffs and dales that extend to Herriman, Riverton, and Draper. Bluffdale was originally part of West Jordan but then a settler named Orrin Porter Rockwell bought sixteen acres of land for five hundred dollars near the Crystal Hot Lakes (next to the current Utah State Prison). This land included a pony express station, hotel, stable, brewery, and much more. As the fledgling community grew, the Bluffdale area became part of South Jordan. There are seven irrigation canals in the Bluffdale area that serve the Salt Lake Valley valley with water for farming and suburbia.
